Good California Cabernets in this price range are a rarity, but this wine made Eric Asimov’s recent “Top 20 Reds under $20” article in the New York Times. “Foxglove is the reliable value arm of Varner Wine, which makes fine Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs [and which Joel has visited]. Foxglove expands that range with moderately priced wines like this Paso Robles Cabernet, which is bold and intense yet not at all a fruit bomb. It’s juicy and balanced and will go well with steaks and chops.” Varner Vineyards is the life and love of Jim and Bob Varner. Bob is the winemaker, Jim is the business guy. They grow the grapes for their estate Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays around the winery in Santa Cruz. The grapes for the foxglove wines are purchased. The Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a nearly 11,000-case cuvée, comes from northern Paso Robles from all hillside vineyards and represents a soft, round, juicy, succulent style of Cabernet. It has black and red currants, loamy soil notes and plenty of juiciness. The wine is delicious and best drunk over the next 2-3 years.
